December is a month full of promise. There is so much to look forward to, from selecting the perfect gifts, to celebrating with friends and family, to nativity scenes with tinsel clad angels, to cheerful concerts and superb singing, to parcels wrapped under trees, to cosy nights lit by twinkling lights, to ‘one more sleep’, to Christmas morning.
Of course, you may read that list and be filled with dread (a little bit like the shepherds at their encounter with the angels). December may well be filled with promise – but how often does reality match up to our high expectations? Or perhaps you have already come to the stage of lowering your hopes to avoid disappointment.
Advent coincides with December and it is a season packed with promises. The promise of a son who would be a blessing to all the nations on the earth. The promise of a light in the darkness. The promise of a Saviour. The promise of that Saviour returning once more. The difference with these promises is that with the birth of Jesus, we know that God is keeping His word. The question then is – how do we respond to them?
